This popular 12 night tour of the Deep South introduces America’s rich musical history as well as the Civil Rights and Civil War history. You will visit the music centres of Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans. Day 1 London – Atlanta
You will be collected from your home and transferred to London Heathrow Airport and fly direct to Atlanta, Georgia. Coach transfer to the hotel: Holiday Inn Express or Marriott Century Center Hotel or Hotel Indigo Mid Town.
Day 2 Atlanta – Chattanooga
In the morning you take a tour of the city linked with the Gone With The Wind film and see sites connected with Martin Luther King and visit the national memorial dedicated to the the American civil rights movement. Then travel to Chattanooga and check into the hotel -Hampton Inn Downtown or Holiday Inn Hamilton Place or Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel.
Day 3 Chattanooga
Chattanooga has the largest historic steam railroad in the south. You will board a mountain railway called The Incline Railway which runs up Lookout Mountain and offers wonderful views. The rest of the day is free for you to explore.
Day 4 Lynchburg – Nashville
Today you travel to Lynchburg and visit the Jack Daniel’s Distillery which has been producing whisky since 1866. Strangely no liquor can be bought from this location due to a law held over from the prohibition era. Next you travel to the Belle Meade plantation, near Nashville and look around the 1853 Greek mansion. Then transfer to the Gaylord Opryland Resort next to the Grand Ole Opry or Inn at Opryland for the next two nights.
Day 5 Nashville
Nashville is famous for its country music and also has the only full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon. The morning’s city tour includes the Parthenon replica and the Country Music Hall of Fame. There is an optional excursion to see The Grand Ole Opry, America’s longest-running scheduled show since 1925. This excursion is bookable prior to departure (subject to availability).
Day 6 Nashville – Tupelo – Memphis
Today you travel to Tupelo and visit Elvis Presley’s Birthplace Museum. You will see the two roomed house Elvis lived in his early years and the associated museum. Next you will travel to Memphis. After a brief tour you will stay at the Holiday Inn Select or Crowne Plaza for the next two nights.
Day 7 Memphis
In the morning you will visit the legendary Graceland, home of Elvis Presley. Take an audio walking tour around the mansion and estate concluding with his final resting place. Your ticket also includes the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum and Elvis Presley’s Memphis, the new complex at Graceland. You are free to look around Memphis for the remainder of the day.
Day 8 Memphis – Vicksburg
Tour the Vicksburg National Military Park which commemorates the Civil War, passing antebellum homes and see where Coca Cola was first bottled in 1894. Then stay overnight at the Holiday Inn or Courtyard Marriott.
Day 9 Vicksburg – New Orleans
Following the Mississippi River down to Natchez, you will see many grand mansions on route similar to the ones from the film ‘Gone with the Wind’. We cross into Louisiana and then arrive for a brief tour of New Orleans. The hotel you will be staying at is the Sheraton or Hyatt or Astor Crowne Plaza, New Orleans.
Day 10 New Orleans
Today is a free day to see the sights of New Orleans. Listen to the music in the many bars in Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. In the evening you will cruise on the Natchez Paddle steamer on the Mississippi River and listen to a traditional jazz band.
Day 11 New Orleans
Another day at leisure to visit the many attractions of New Orleans such as the huge mansions and the above ground tombs in the Garden District.
Day 12 New Orleans – Lafayette
You will visit the town of Baton Rouge, an old plantation town. Next onto Vermillionville which is a re-constructed historic village that depicts Cajun and Cerole life, where you can learn about the historic Acadian settlers by viewing the restored homes and talking to the costumed actors. Later you arrive in Lafayette , the capital of French Louisiana where you have free time to explore. Stay for 1 night at the Doubletree Lafayette or Jury Inn and Suites.
Day 13 Lafayette – Houston – In flight
You travel to Houston and visit the Houston Space Center and then onto the airport for your direct, scheduled British Airways or Virgin Atlantic flight to London.
Day 14 Arrival at London Heathrow Airport where you will be met and guided to your vehicle for the journey home.
