Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from UK to Chicago. On arrival make your own way to your hotel.

Day 2 Chicago: Full day to explore Chicago.

Day 3 Chicago/St Louis: Collect your rental car and begin your self drive tour. Starting on the East coast head for St Louis passing by cornfields and endless prairies. Once in St Louis you will discover many historic sites including the Gateway Arch. (300 miles)

Day 4 St Louis/Springfield Cruising through the Ozark Highlands of southern Missouri to Springfield, accepted as the birthplace of Route 66 back in 1926. En route you can stop at Meramec Cavern’s which are a comprehensive set of natural limestone caves and used by Jesse James as a hideout. (210 miles)

Day 5 Springfield/Oklahoma City: In the morning, cut through the edge of Kansas on your way to Oklahoma City. En route you can see the 20 foot tall cement Blue Whale in Catoosa, and also the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in Tulsa. (310 miles).

Day 6 Oklahoma City/Amarillo: Continue through Oklahoma to Amarillo, located in the Texas Panhandle. Suggested stops today include the Route 66 Museum in Clinton and the first restored Phillips 66 gas station In McClean. Once you arrive in Amarillo, you must stop at the Big Texas Steak Ranch where only the very hungry people should attempt their 72oz steak challenge! (260 miles).

Day 7 Amarillo/Albuquerque: Visit the Cadillac Ranch where you will find ten colourfully painted Cadillac cars buried grille first in the ground. Then continue to the MidPoint Café in Adrian and from there follow Route 66 to Albuquerque in New Mexico. (270 miles)

Day 8 Albuquerque: Spend some time exploring Albuquerque’s Central Avenue with lots of Route 66 landmarks and a historic Old Town which offers a glimpse of New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial past. Also see the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre which traces the history of the region’s Native American cultures.

Day 9 Albuquerque/Santa Fe/Albuquerque: To get a true sense of the Old Route 66 detour to Santa Fe, one of the most picturesque cities in the state. Plan to visit one of Santa Fe’s famous art galleries, art markets or museums. (116 miles)

Day 10 Albuquerque/Holbrook: Be amazed by thousand acres of petrified trees, historic structures and archaeological sites to be found within the Petrified Forest National Park. (260 miles)

Day 11 Holbrook/Grand Canyon National Park: Continue to Meteor City, a true old trading post, then pass through Flagstaff and Williams and on to Grand Canyon National Park. Spend the day at the Grand Canyon with a tour of the South Rim or walking along part of the Rim Trail. (180 miles)

Day 12 Grand Canyon National Park/Las Vegas: Make your way to Seligman, and afterwards on to Kingman before reaching Hoover Dam. Continue to Las Vegas. (300 miles)

Day 13 Las Vegas: Day to explore Las Vegas. You will never be short of something to do in Vegas. Every theme hotel has something different to offer or you could try your luck in a casino or see a show or simply relax.

Day 14 Las Vegas/Santa Monica: Set out via the Mojave Desert for Ghost Town of Calico, this is California’s real silver mining town. In Barstow go to the Route 66 Mother Road Museum. Continue on via Pasadena to Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills to Santa Monica. Park and complete the last few blocks on foot to see the “End of the Trail” sign on Santa Monica’s pier.

Day 15 Santa Monica: Day at Leisure on the beach or shopping. Alternatively you could visit Universal Studios or trip to Los Angeles.

Day 16 Los Angeles/Santa Monica: Return your hire car at Los Angeles International Airport and join return flight to the UK
